Sixth Alumni Conference Took Place at Nagaloka

The 6th Alumni conference took place in Nagaloka 7th – 12th November, 2014. The theme was “Dhammakranti and Social Action in Your Area”. The aim of the conference was to bring alumni together, create a platform to share their experiences on their effots to spread Buddhism in their respective states, and to review alumni social and Dhamma activities. Nearly 80 alumni participated. The alumni made presentations, and group discussions, panel discussions, talks, and cultural programmes took place.

The conference opiened with a key note speech by Dhammachari Vivekaratna, Nagarjuna Training Institute. Dhammacharini Bodhimodini gave a talk entitled “Sharing Experience of Working with Women” and Dhammacharini Abhayadana on “Balsanskar Varg”. Alumni presentations were made on the basis of their experiences with different Tritatna centres throughout the country and the challenges they faced in the society. These alumni were Amit from Uttar Pradesh, Dhammasen from Orissa, Sugatavmso from Gujarat, Jadumani from Orissa, Divya from Tamil Nadu, Maitreyaratna from Orissa, and Kamal from Rajasthan.

A panel discussion headed by Maitreyanath and Vivekaratna discussed difficulties faced by alumni in their day-to-day field work, and looked at ways to overcome challenges. This was followed by group presentation of each state sharing plan of action of their activities .Nilima Ambekar and Dh.Suvidhya from Manuski, Pune took a session on social action.

Seminar on Contribution to Buddhism by Anagarika Dharmapal and Dr. Ambedkar

Nagarjuna Training Institute organised a one-day seminar on “The Contribution to Buddhism of Anagarika Dharmapala and Dr. Babasaheb Ambedkar” on 7th November, 2014 at Buddhasurya Vihar in Nagaloka, Nagpur. Many Dhammacharis, Dhammacharinis and alumni participated. Dhammachari Lokamitra delivered the keynote address. He was joined by Venerable Revatta, former Secretary of Mahabodhi Society, India, and head of the Sri Lankan Bhikkhu Sangha in India, Dhammachari Devamitra from United Kingdom and Dhammacharini Vijaya from Nagpur.

Dhammachari Lokamitra inspired people by telling his own indirect connection with Anagarika Dharmapala thorugh Urgyen Sangharakshita and one of Dharmapala’s disciples, the late Ven Sangharatana.  He looked at similarities in the approaches of Anagarik Dharmapala and Dr. Babasaheb Ambedkar. Ven. Revata started with the quote “If there is no discipline, there is no religion”. His talk was on vision of Urgyen Sangarakshita, Anagarika Dharmapala and Dr. Babasaheb Ambedkar’s contribution towards the revival of Buddhism in India, and the history of the Mahabodhi temple. DhammachariDevamitra talked of his own understanding on Dr. Babasaheb Ambedkar’s approach towards Buddhism. Dhammacharini Vijaya drew attention to the unique contributions made by these two great personalities of 20th century. The talks were followed by discussion and questions from participants. Dr. Satish Shambharkar, of Nagarjuna Institue expressed his gratitude to speakers and participants, and concluded with vote of thanks.

Valedictory Function of Dhammasakhiya Course

VALEDICTORY FUNCTION OF DHAMMASAKHIYA COURSE

The Dhammasekhiya trainees from Nagarjuna Training Institute (NTI) completed their course for which the valedictory function was held on 28th February, 2015 at Buddha Surya Vihar. It was the day everyone, including students as well as staffs looked forward to mark the culmination of the achievements of trainees in Dhammasakhiya course. There was a mixed bundle of emotions among staff and trainees.

The Chief Guests for this function were Dhammachari Amoghashiddi, Public preceptor of Triratna Boudha Mahasangha and Dr. Sonawane, Professor of Government Medical College, Nagpur; and the function was presided over by Gauthama Prabhu, Director of NTI. The presence of Dhammachari Pragyaratna, Dhammachari Manidhamma, Dhammachari Nagmitra, Dhammachari Padmavir and Dr. Satish graced the function. Parents, relatives and friends of trainees participated in the function.

The programme commenced with introductory speech by Dhammachari Pragyaratna. He made a special mention about the day, marking it as an important as well as an inspirational day. The day is important because the students who have stayed away from their family for eight months are going back to their home and meet their families, and it is an inspirational day as these students will spread Buddhist principals and practices, and work for welfare of society in their respective states.

Among the trainees, three girls and three boys were called upon to share their experiences. Amongst these were Ashwini from Karnataka, Jaydeep from Orissa, Savitri from Orissa, Bhanupratap from Rajasthan, Nisha from Uttar Pradesh and Lakhinder from Jharkhand. Each one of them expressed their gratitude to Nagarjuna Training Institute, talked about their own experiences that they have gained during the training period and shared their vision towards the making of Prabuddha Bharat.

This was followed by certificate distribution by respected chief guests. Speaking on the occasion, Dhammachari Amoghasiddhi emphasized on self realization and to become a good human being. He said “when we look back to our life, we should not feel regretful for what we have done”. Dr.Sonawane wished student for their better future and appreciated students for sharing their experiences.

Gauthama Prabhu gave a motivational talk on loving-kindness and inspired the trainees to be mindful and use skilful means to face challenges from the society. Nagmitra shared some of his field visit experiences especially how family gave up blind faith, and also wished to invite donors for such events in the future.

Dr. Satish proposed a vote of thanks and expressed his gratitude to chief guests for visiting in such a short notice and also for their inspirational speech.
